A joint funeral service was held December 27 for longtime ICHA members and Iowa Breeders Cutting Futurity Association leaders, Jerry and Virginia Williams, of Corydon, Iowa. Virginia Williams, 83, passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. Virginia Kay Russell was born on April 16, 1938 to Virgil and Edith (Ball) Russell in New Virginia, Iowa. The family moved to a farm north of Seymour, Iowa where they raised horned Hereford cattle and she attended school graduating with the class of 1956. During this time she was part of the basketball team that qualified for state also participating and placing in the state free-throw contest.

On April 20, 1958, Virginia married Jerry Lee Williams. The newlyweds in love spent their time roller skating, square dancing and playing fast pitch softball. Around this time is when Jerry would start his managing career of Neelys and then De-flecta Shield until the late 1980s. They welcomed their first child, Cindy in May of 1959. In the off season of rodeo, Jerry enjoyed hunting with his dad and brother, and playing cards with friends. He especially enjoyed his coon hunting and training mules. In March of 1963, they welcomed their son Rick. Virginia was a stay at home mother until Rick became school age. That is when she started her career of over 40 years as a secretary at Neely Manufacturing in Corydon. She would secretary rodeos in Iowa and Missouri as her loving husband competed and picked up broncs for several years.

In 1973, Virginia and Jerry moved their small family to an acreage just on the north edge of town where a new adventure would begin. It was at this time Virginia and Jerry purchased the horse Jae Bar Flynn, which started the love for the cutting horse. Virginia took great pride in her mares and babies. She would study the pedigrees and performance records to ensure she raised only the best they could. She enjoyed most of all watching and cheering on her children and grandchildren. From the wrestling mat to the rodeo arena you could always find her in the stands or along the fence.

Jerry Williams, 85, passed away on December 24, 2021 at Wayne County Hospital. Jerry was born to Samuel Glenn & Hester (Ryan) Williams on September 8, 1936 in Corydon. Raised as the youngest of 4 children on a farm East of Corydon. Known as Buddy to family and friends he joined two older sisters; Twyla Anne and Barbara Jean, and a brother Samuel Glenn Jr. He received his education from Corydon High School as a Hornet graduating in 1955. Football was his sport of choice though he never was the biggest one on the field.

As a younger man, Jerry enjoyed his fast cars and freedom. So much so, that he would carry extra parts with him. He especially enjoyed taunting the local police. Jerry and his brother in law Dwight drove semis, which would lead into a life long passion for driving trucks. From hauling cattle to grains, there wasn’t much he wouldn’t haul. Jerry’s passion was picking up broncs at local rodeos as well as traveling into Missouri to compete. He competed in the steer wrestling which usually ended with torn close that Virginia would mend and repair.

Upon his retirement his enjoyment for horses was passed on to his children as he greatly enjoyed showing the cutting horses that Virginia and him had bred and raised.

Left to cherish their memory is their daughter Cindy Miller (Bruce), son Rick Williams (Marcy), grandchildren Markus Williams, and Misti Salsberry (Chaz), Kayle Miller (Jon), Seth Miller (Alyson), Addison Fry (Alex), great-grandchilrern Kolbie Salsberry, Conlan and Landon McCarty, Jerry’s sister Barbara Jean Fetters, sister-in-law Janet Williams, as well as numerous extended family. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia, siblings: Twyla Anne Smith and Samuel Glenn Williams Jr.

If you are a stallion owner located in the State of Iowa and would like to nominate your stallion to the IOWA BREEDERS CUTTING FUTURITY ASSOCIATION, the Stallion Nomination Form is available below, or contact Virginia Williams, Secretary/Treasurer. Continuous stallion nomination ensures that all of a stallion’s foals are eligible every year.  If a stallion is only paid for 1 breeding year, then only the foals from that year are eligible to be shown.

Mares sired by a Nominated Stallion may be nominated, bred to any stallion. Nomination Fee of $250 is due by December 15 of the breeding year. That resulting foal is eligible for the Iowa Breeders Cutting Futurity as a 3 year old, 4 year old and 5/6 year old.
